Traditional stone buildings in the Asir region retain one of their most distinctive aesthetic features: \u201cal-Maru,\u201d the gleaming white stone that has long been a hallmark of the decoration on house facades, and exemplifies the ingenuity of Asir\u2019s builders in utilizing elements of the local environment to create architecture that blends function with beauty.

In the past, builders relied on collecting \u201cal-maru\u201d stones from mountainous areas, which they would then break into small pieces and carefully arrange within the stone facades to form geometric decorative units adorning doors and windows and extending up the height of the buildings in patterns ranging from triangles and squares and vertical and horizontal lines, giving the building a distinctive visual contrast between the whiteness of the maro and the dark color of the stones.
The use of maro was not limited to aesthetic purposes; rather, it was one of the elements that reflected the architectural identity of the Asir region, as it helped highlight the distinctive character of traditional buildings, and demonstrated the skill of artisans in creating intricate decorative patterns using local natural materials, without the need for manufactured materials or modern techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marwa is accompanied by a number of decorative elements for which Asiri architecture is renowned, including \u201cal-kharaja,\u201d \u201dal-khidar,\u201d \u201dal-khamshah,\u201d \u201dal-shurufat,\u201d \u201dal-qadab,\u201d and \u201dal-Qatran,\u201d which together form a comprehensive artistic system that reflects the Asiri community\u2019s aesthetic sensibilities, its close connection to the land, and its commitment to imbuing its homes with beauty.
Traces of these decorations remain visible in many heritage villages in the Asir region, where al-Maru continues to serve as a testament to the authenticity of local architecture; its distinctive hardness and natural luster have enabled it to withstand the ravages of time, and maintain its presence on the facades of historic homes.

The growing interest in preserving heritage buildings is part of national efforts aimed at safeguarding the built heritage, reviving traditional crafts, and strengthening cultural identity, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom\u2019s Vision 2030 to protect the national heritage, highlighting its cultural value, and transforming it into a cultural and tourist asset that enriches the visitor experience and passes on the architectural heritage of Asir to future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
