Al-Shahrani revealed that the name \u201cAl-Yanfa\u201d derives from the term \u201cal-nafa\u2019a,\u201d a term commonly used among the region\u2019s residents that embodies the values of cooperation, solidarity, and teamwork. The villagers used to join forces in various aspects of life, including farming, digging wells, building houses, constructing terraced fields, harvesting crops, and other tasks requiring joint efforts. As a result, \u201cal-nafa\u2019a\u201d became a time-honored social tradition from which the village derived its name, and it remains alive in the memory of the local community.

He said: \u201cThe village was historically known as \u201dthe homeland of the Al-Yanfa family\u2019 due to its high population density, which made it one of the largest settlements in the region; its status helped cement its social and economic role throughout history.\u201d He added that the history of the Al-Yanfa village dates back more than three thousand years, according to a field study conducted by a Swedish archaeologist who visited the village. The study examined its archaeological evidence\u2014including fossils, wells, and burial sites\u2014which confirm the antiquity of human settlement at the site and reflect its rich cultural heritage.

He noted that among the village\u2019s most prominent landmarks are the ancient wells, which were dug by the villagers themselves since time immemorial, which are distinguished by their ability to provide fresh water year-round and have contributed to the stability of the population and the prosperity of agricultural activity, along with the ancient burial sites and grain silos used by the villagers to store their food crops, and the historic mosques that reflect the village\u2019s heritage and cultural depth. Together, these constitute cultural landmarks that highlight the villagers\u2019 ingenuity in managing resources, achieving food security, and preserving their architectural and cultural heritage across generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Shahrani added that one of the most notable signs of the village\u2019s long history is its residents\u2019 ingenuity in making use of the mountainous environment, as there are more than 70 ancient wells scattered throughout the village that were carved into the rock to provide fresh water, including seven adjacent wells carved into the rock formations, along with an ingenious engineering system for transporting well water and rainwater through underground channels and conduits that run beneath the houses without compromising the structural integrity of the buildings, all the way to the agricultural terraces on the mountain slopes\u2014a model that reflects the engineering advances the village has known for centuries.
He noted that throughout its history, the village has been self-sufficient thanks to the abundance of water and the fertility of the land; the villagers have relied on agriculture as their primary activity, growing wheat, corn, lentils (lentils) and livestock feed, making use of both well-irrigated fields and rain-fed fields, while underground rock-cut storage chambers were designated for preserving grains for many years, most notably \u201cBeit al-Jama\u2019a,\u201d which served as a food reserve for the villagers and was used to honor guests and assist the needy in times of hardship.

<\/strong>He explained that the village is rich in historical landmarks, foremost among which is the old mosque, which\u2014according to historians\u2014dates back to 105 AH, in addition to five other historic mosques, It also features adjacent heritage neighborhoods connected by covered passageways and walkways that facilitate movement between homes, a layout that reflects the strength of social cohesion and the spirit of cooperation and mutual support that enabled the residents to construct palaces and multi-story houses using local stone, mud, and wood.

He noted that the architectural style of the village of Al-Yanfa is considered one of the most prominent examples of traditional architecture in the region, as the village comprises some 460 houses and a multi-story heritage palace, built according to sophisticated engineering principles that took into account the nature of the mountainous terrain. Local stone and clay extracted from farms were used in their construction, along with wood for roofing and structural reinforcement. This combination has endowed the structures with durability and architectural beauty, enabling them to withstand the test of time and making them a living testament to the villagers\u2019 mastery of traditional building techniques, and their creativity in utilizing local materials to construct majestic buildings that have preserved their architectural identity to this day.
He explained that the village is home to historic farms covering an area estimated at approximately 120,000 square meters, spread across agricultural terraces that have contributed to the flourishing of agricultural activity, and, together with the palaces and traditional houses, form a cohesive picture that embodies the close relationship between people and the land and reflects the agricultural way of life for which the village has been known throughout its history.

He emphasized that the support and guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Asir Region and Chairman of its Development Authority, have contributed to transforming the homeland of the Al-Yanfa family into a distinctive tourist and cultural destination by preserving its urban identity and leveraging its historical and heritage assets, and presenting them to visitors as part of a comprehensive experience that blends tradition and modernity, thereby strengthening its presence on the Kingdom\u2019s heritage tourism map and aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 for the development of the tourism sector.

On the first day of the Al-Yanfa Village festivities, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) captured details of the village\u2019s distinctive traditional architectural style, where multi-story stone palaces and houses\u2014built from local stone, mud, and wood\u2014harmonize with historic courtyards and stone walkways, creating a scene that embodies the craftsmanship of ancient builders and their harmony with the natural surroundings. It also documented the ancient wells, agricultural terraces, and courtyards that host cultural events and folk performances, offering visitors a comprehensive experience that combines the richness of history, the beauty of traditional architecture, and the vitality of cultural heritage in its authentic setting.

The village will continue to welcome visitors through August 31, 2026, as part of a 68-day program featuring cultural and heritage events, interactive experiences for families and children, as well as folk performances, handicrafts, and traditional markets, as part of efforts to enrich the tourist experience, preserve the architectural heritage, and highlight the cultural identity.
