Theft of a phone, assault in a crowded street, or a murder near a famous destination; incidents that are no longer strange in some of the world's most famous cities.
However, we return to it! What makes us choose a city where we know the risks, while there are more safe cities? Perhaps because we do not calculate safety in the same way as we calculate the rest of the elements of the place.
When we compare cities, we look at location, services, restaurants, shopping, weather, and quality of life; the city\u2019s reputation, history, image, and others\u2019 experiences influence us; as for safety, we often assume it exists; as if peace of mind is not a value, but something we only pay attention to when it\u2019s absent.
We know the impact of location on property value, and we know the value of views, services, and proximity to attractions. But we don't know what it means to walk at night without fear, or to move with your family without being distracted by those around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps it is because some values are not realized until we lose them. Security when it is available becomes habitual; when it is gone, we discover how much freedom it gave us to move, choose, and enjoy the place.
The numbers give us an idea of this value: in the UK, the General Statistics Authority indicates that 97.7% of the population feel safe walking alone at night in their neighborhoods. In London, the percentage is 68%, and it drops to 58% for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the differences between the two indicators, the question remains: why is safety not factored into our assessment of the place to the extent it deserves? In the economy of place, safety is not an additional benefit, but rather an underlying infrastructure. It allows people to use the city freely, to walk its streets, and to stay there for longer periods of time. When it recedes, its hidden cost becomes apparent: caution. And caution changes our relationship with the place; we shorten our route, leave early, avoid a street, and observe what is around us. Then the city may be open on the map, but it is not fully available in the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
