\nAramco topped the list of the world\u2019s largest oil companies in 2012, according to a recent ranking by *Forbes* magazine of global companies based on their production capacity, regardless of whether they are publicly traded or not. Forbes based its production volume estimates on data from Wood Mackenzie, with the figures used in the ranking representing combined oil and gas production. Aramco ranked first with a production capacity of 12.5 million barrels per day, The company generates daily revenue of up to $1 billion and owns the Al-Ghawar field, located in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Kingdom\u2019s Eastern Province\u2014a giant field capable of producing five million barrels per day. Russia\u2019s Gazprom ranked second with a production capacity of 9.7 million barrels per day; it is controlled by the government in Moscow and is the world\u2019s largest gas producer, with annual profits exceeding $40 billion. In third place was the National Iranian Oil Company, with a production capacity of 6.4 million barrels per day. ExxonMobil came in fourth with a production capacity of 5.3 million barrels per day; it is the largest U.S. oil company, with annual profits of approximately $40 billion. In fifth place was China\u2019s PetroChina, with a production capacity of 4.4 million barrels per day; it is the largest Chinese oil company and is controlled and managed by the government. Sixth place went to British Petroleum (BP), the largest British oil company with assets around the world, with a production capacity of 4.1 million barrels per day. Royal Dutch Shell, one of Europe\u2019s major oil companies, ranked seventh with a production capacity of 3.9 million barrels per day. Eighth place went to Pemex, owned by the Mexican government, with a production capacity of 3.6 million barrels per day, followed in ninth place by Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company, with a production capacity of 3.5 million barrels per day, which acquired Atlas Petroleum in 2010 for $4.3 billion.
