With the participation of major international and local companies in the tourism and hospitality sectors, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Public Investment Fund, announced the launch of a global tourism project in the Kingdom known as the \u201cRed Sea Project.\u201d The project aims to develop exceptional tourist resorts on more than 50 natural islands between the cities of Amlaj and Al-Wajh, located a short distance from one of the Kingdom\u2019s nature reserves and the dormant volcanoes in the Harat Al-Rahat region.<\/p>\n

A Quantum Leap in the Tourism Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The area where the project will be built is considered one of the most beautiful and diverse natural sites in the world. The project is set to become a leading coastal destination, bolstering the development of the tourism economy\u2014one of the most important sectors for growth under Vision 2030. The \u201cRed Sea\u201d project will bring about a qualitative leap in the concept of tourism and the hospitality sector. The project is located on a number of pristine islands in the Red Sea, in addition to its proximity to the Mada\u2019in Saleh archaeological site, which is renowned for its architectural beauty and significant historical importance. The project\u2019s strategic location and proximity to the coast will allow tourists and visitors the opportunity to discover the region\u2019s hidden treasures, including a nature reserve where they can explore the diverse flora and fauna of the area. Adventure seekers will be able to explore the dormant volcanoes located near the project area, and diving enthusiasts will be able to explore the abundant coral reefs in the surrounding waters.<\/p>\n

Opening the Red Sea Gateway to the World<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project is guided by new standards that aim to elevate global tourism by opening the Red Sea to the world, so that visitors can discover its treasures and embark on new adventures that attract tourists from local, regional, and global markets alike. The project will serve as a hub for everything related to entertainment, wellness, and relaxation, and as a comprehensive model for a healthy and vibrant community.<\/p>\n

Heritage sites will also be restored and developed based on scientific principles to ensure they are ready to welcome visitors. For example, a maximum number of visitors allowed in the area at any one time will be set, in line with global best practices in tourism and archaeology. To preserve the region\u2019s unique and distinctive environmental character, laws and mechanisms related to environmental sustainability will be established, and efforts will be made to conserve natural resources in accordance with internationally recognized best practices and standards.<\/p>\n

Partnerships with Leading Global Companies<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Public Investment Fund will provide the initial investment for this project and pave the way for partnerships with leading global companies, which will help attract new direct investment to the Kingdom while seeking to attract and redirect Saudi tourism spending back to the domestic market.
\nThe project will also attract the world\u2019s leading names in the tourism and hospitality sectors to leverage their expertise, capabilities, and financial investments in enriching the destination\u2019s offerings, providing greater added value to its visitors, and maximizing economic gains for the Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Airport Development, Hotels, and Luxury Housing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cRed Sea\u201d project will be developed as a special zone, where regulations will be implemented in accordance with global best practices and expertise to enable the achievement of the project\u2019s objectives. The cornerstone will be laid in the third quarter of 2019, with the first phase scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2022. This phase will include the development of the airport and seaport, the construction of luxury hotels and residences, the completion of facilities and infrastructure, and the provision of transportation services (boats, seaplanes, and others).<\/p>\n
