Approximately 1,395 students attended the university\u2019s annual gala, amid significant media attention reflecting the university\u2019s status as the first non-traditional academic institution and as an organization that contributes to guiding development in scientific, social, and cultural fields. It was founded on the initiative of Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz in 1996, with the aim of supporting Arab communities by providing high-quality, accessible education that offers equal opportunities at affordable, non-profit costs, before evolving in 2002 into a comprehensive university in collaboration with the Open University in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
