The Communications and Information Technology Commission recently held a press conference to present the \u201cMaqyas\u201d report, which monitors and measures the overall quality of internet service in the Kingdom. During the conference, the Commission released the \u201cMukias\u201d report for the first quarter of 2018, which showed that the average download speed for mobile broadband services in the Kingdom reached 19.3 Mbps, while the average upload speed was 11.2 Mbps during the first quarter of this year. The report also noted a steady monthly increase in download speeds for mobile broadband services since December 2017, recording an improvement of 18% by the end of March 2018.<\/p>\n
The Authority noted that the steady increase in download speeds is due to improvements in download speeds on 4G networks, which increased by approximately 17% in the fourth quarter of 2017, It is worth noting that this improvement has been reflected in mobile internet upload speeds, which have risen steadily by approximately 12.7% since the end of 2017, with 4G upload speeds increasing steadily by 9% since the end of 2017.<\/p>\n
The Authority noted that network congestion plays a significant role in mobile internet download speeds; as evidenced by speed tests conducted by users, there was a 26% decrease in download speeds during peak hours, Upload speeds were affected to a much lesser extent, with a decrease of 13%.<\/p>\n
In terms of the video streaming quality on YouTube, a report by \u201cMqyas\u201d showed that the highest percentage of videos on YouTube are streamed over mobile networks in Full HD resolution.<\/p>\n
With regard to fixed-line Internet, the report noted that the average download speed for fixed-line Internet was 83% of the speeds advertised in subscriber plans, while upload speeds for fixed-line Internet achieved a better rate of nearly 92% of the advertised speeds.<\/p>\n
The Authority called on interested Internet users throughout the Kingdom to participate and engage in the measurement process, which, God willing, will benefit everyone by helping to identify areas for improvement and enhance the quality of the Internet services provided to them.<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that on 20\/1\/1439 AH, the Communications and Information Technology Commission launched the \u201cMaqyas\u201d initiative to measure the quality of the internet user experience in the Kingdom, based on a partnership between the Commission and all subscribers; The initiative aims to monitor and measure the overall quality of Internet service in the Kingdom in collaboration with SamNoz, a company specializing in measuring Internet performance quality.<\/p>\n
