According to the latest reports, the total balance of foreign direct investment flows to Saudi Arabia by the end of last year amounted to 230.786 billion dollars (865.45 billion riyals), and according to a statistic issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the flow of foreign direct investment to Saudi Arabia increased by 1.79 billion dollars between 2017 and 2018.<\/p>\n

Foreign Investment in Saudi Arabia Rises<\/h3>\n

Inward FDI into Saudi Arabia rose from $1.419 billion in 2017 to $3.209 billion in 2018. Recent efforts to diversify the kingdom's economy have identified FDI as a key priority after the drop in oil prices, the organization said. Total inflows amounted to $176.378 billion by the end of 2010, while the balance was only $17.57 billion in 2000.<\/p>\n

For comparison, Saudi Arabia's FDI inflow was $8.865 billion in 2013, $8.012 billion in 2014, $8.141 billion in 2015, and $7.453 in 2016. \u00abSome new projects have been established outside the oil and gas sector. In 2018, OPEN Group (UK) invested $743 million to set up a chemical manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia. DuPont (US) opened a reverse osmosis water treatment facility, the first project outside the US, and Alphabet (US) began building multiple data centers in Saudi Arabia.\u00bb Outflows from Asia decreased by 3 percent to $401 billion. This is mainly due to investments from China falling for the second consecutive year. By contrast, outbound investments from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Thailand increased.<\/p>\n

Saudi Overseas Investment<\/h3>\n

Saudi Arabia's foreign direct investment abroad amounted to $4.943 billion in 2013, $5.396 billion in 2014, $5.390 billion in 2015, and $8.936 billion in 2016. The total balance of Saudi investments abroad increased nearly four times in eight years, reaching $105.656 billion at the end of 2018, compared to $26.528 billion at the end of 2010.Saudi Arabia's outward investment balance increased 20 times when comparing 2000 and 2018, or from $5.285 billion at the end of 2000 to $105.656 billion at the end of 2018.The Saudi investment balance increased 20 times between 2000 and 2018, or from $5.285 billion at the end of 2000 to $105.656 billion at the end of 2018. Investments from Asian countries<\/h3>\n

\u00a0 <\/span>Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to West Asia - the region that includes Saudi Arabia - increased by 3 percent to $29 billion in 2018, halting a nearly decade-long downward trend. But investment inflows are still only a third of the peak of $85 billion in 2008.<\/p>\n

The small rise in FDI can be attributed to increased inflows to Saudi Arabia and Middle Eastern countries, which offset declines in other countries, UNCTAD said. FDI inflows to the UAE remained largely unchanged in 2018, at $10.385 billion from $10.354 billion in 2017.<\/p>\n
