Electronic payments operations for the retail sector in the Kingdom exceeded the expected limit and reached new record levels at the end of July 2019, recording more than 36% of all available payment transactions, including cash, exceeding the level of the share of non-cash transactions targeted by the Kingdom's Vision 2030 through the targets of the Financial Sector Development Program, which aimed to reach the level of 28% by the end of 2020. A specialized and comprehensive study conducted by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) in cooperation with the Saudi Payments Company, which acts as an enabler and operator of the national payments infrastructure in the Kingdom, revealed the diversity of electronic payment methods used, where the percentage of card payments accounted for the largest share by nearly 30%, while other means varied between SADAD payments, money transfers and others.<\/p>\n
Mada's POS service has recorded unprecedented leaps and bounds over the past years in terms of the number and value of purchase transactions. While the results of the study crown the hard work done by Saudi Payments and the success of its strategy in adopting and introducing the latest technical solutions in the field of enabling non-cash payment infrastructure, the positive indicators of the study showed the success of the joint work system led by the Monetary Authority in cooperation with Saudi Payments to support the activation of electronic channels in cooperation with the local banking sector and the participation of relevant service providers from the private sector, in addition to the organization's continuous cooperation with government agencies to promote e-payments.<\/p>\n
The study included a comprehensive review of indicators measuring the proportions of e-payments to total payments in the Kingdom, including a review of the payment methods currently used in the individual sectors according to international practices, in addition to the government and business payment sectors.<\/p>\n
