The company said in a report that the latest General Authority for Statistics data on inflation for May 2020 indicates that the overall inflation rate increased by 1.1 percent year-on-year and decreased by 0.2 percent month-on-month, compared to an increase of 1.3 percent year-on-year and a decrease of 0.1 percent month-on-month in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food and beverage prices escalate<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The company explained that food and beverage prices in the Kingdom have taken an upward trajectory in contrast to the global food price trajectory, with prices rising by 4.9 percent from the beginning of the year to May, driven by higher household consumption of food products during the lockdown period. The company expected higher consumption in the education, utilities, jewelry, furniture, and electronics sectors, ruling out a significant increase in imports ahead of the VAT hike in July 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although consumer spending rose in May, and likely July, according to partial data for June, the company expects it to slow down in July and remain low until the end of the year, citing its expectation that 1.2 mn foreigners will leave in 2020, putting pressure on consumption during the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing and services price deflation<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to the company's forecasts, the \u201chousing, electricity, water and gas\u201d category will see deflationary pressures due to the impact of the \u201chousing rents\u201d subcategory, the continued departure of foreigners and their families, in addition to the high rate of home ownership as a result of the support provided by the \u201cSakani\u201d program.
