Economy <\/strong>\u2013 His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense, on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, President of G20 Summit<\/a> For the year 2020, we extend our deepest gratitude to Their Majesties, Excellencies, Highnesses, and Heads of State\u2014the leaders of the G20 member countries\u2014as well as to everyone who participated in and contributed to the meetings from all countries, and to the representatives of international organizations, the business community, and civil society throughout the Kingdom\u2019s G20 presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His Highness emphasized that the Kingdom\u2019s presidency of the G20 has dedicated its efforts to building a stronger, more resilient, and more sustainable world, in line with the major economic and social transformation the Kingdom is undergoing, guided by the Kingdom\u2019s Vision 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince stated that the Kingdom will continue to support international efforts to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines and treatments are made available to all in a fair and affordable manner as soon as they become available, and will work with its international partners and the Italian presidency of the G20 next year to achieve this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Text of the Crown Prince's Speech<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Peace be upon you, and may God's mercy and blessings be upon you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Chair of the 2020 G20 Summit, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Their Majesties, Excellencies, and Highnesses, the leaders of the G20 member states, as well as to everyone who participated in and contributed to our meetings\u2014including representatives from all countries, international organizations, the business community, and civil society\u2014throughout the Kingdom\u2019s G20 presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its inception, the G20 has served as a vital link between our countries. Over the years, it has reaffirmed the importance of its role in addressing economic, financial, social, and environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its significant health, economic, and social repercussions, our cooperation has been more important than ever, We have tackled this challenge with the seriousness demanded by our responsibility to safeguard human life, protect livelihoods, minimize the damage caused by this pandemic, and enhance our readiness to face future crises\u2014God forbid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pandemic has known no borders; it has reached every country and has directly and indirectly affected every person living on this planet, which has necessitated the activation of the pivotal role played by the G20. To that end, G20 leaders met twice during a single G20 presidency\u2014a first in the group\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address this global threat facing all of humanity, the countries of the group have taken unprecedented and coordinated actions to deal with the pandemic and its consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we stand at the end of an extraordinary year in which we had the honor and responsibility of serving as the Group\u2019s chair. From the very beginning of this year, we set a single goal: \u00abHarnessing the opportunities of the 21st century for all,\u00bb encompassing key areas such as empowering people, protecting the planet, and shaping new horizons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the Health, Economic, and Social Impacts of the Pandemic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Group has adopted our joint priorities for implementation, foremost among which is addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of the pandemic, and taking all necessary measures to protect lives and livelihoods and support the most vulnerable groups, To achieve this, the Group has taken the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First: We immediately provided the necessary resources to those on the front lines in the fight against the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the start of the pandemic, the G20 countries pledged more than 21 billion U.S. dollars to meet immediate funding needs, specifically for the development of diagnostic tools, vaccines, and effective treatments. The Kingdom contributed 500 million dollars to support these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We agreed at the G20 to spare no effort in creating the conditions for everyone to have equitable and affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines, diagnostic tools, and treatments. We continue to work toward that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second: We have taken extraordinary measures to support our economies and our people as part of this year\u2019s G20 Action Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have injected more than 11 trillion U.S. dollars into the global economy to support businesses and protect people\u2019s livelihoods\u2014an unprecedented contribution by the G20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have also expanded social safety nets to protect those at risk of losing their jobs and sources of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, we provided emergency support to the world\u2019s most vulnerable countries, where the pandemic threatens to undo decades of development progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the Debt Service Suspension Initiative, we have provided more than $14 billion to alleviate the debt burden on the most vulnerable countries, which are home to more than one billion people. We have also extended this initiative and will continue to assess the situation to determine whether another extension is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, more than $300 billion has been made available through development banks, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, which are working with the G20 to assist emerging and low-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our strength lies in our unity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Together, we have thus demonstrated that our strength lies in our unity. This is, in fact, the very purpose for which the G20 was established\u2014to bring together nations from every continent to address the pressing challenges of our time and adopt effective, joint solutions to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are well aware of the importance of ensuring better protection against future pandemics, and we must learn from this crisis. To that end, the Kingdom\u2019s G20 Presidency has proposed an initiative that will contribute to \u00abaccess to pandemic response tools,\u00bb This initiative seeks to achieve three objectives: to encourage research, development, and distribution of diagnostic tools, treatments, and vaccines for all infectious diseases; to encourage and facilitate international funding for global pandemic preparedness; and to support the training of epidemiology specialists worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These crises remind us of our humanity and inspire us to take initiative and give generously. Despite the sudden hardships that have accompanied this global pandemic, we have not stopped working on the pillars of the Kingdom\u2019s presidency agenda, which are: Empowering People, Protecting the Planet, and Creating New Horizons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These pillars are now more important than ever for overcoming this global crisis, building a comprehensive and sustainable recovery, and shaping a better world for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kingdom\u2019s G20 Presidency has dedicated its efforts to building a stronger, more resilient, and more sustainable world. This aligns with the major economic and social transformation the Kingdom is undergoing, guided by Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to ensure that all our citizens\u2014especially women and youth\u2014are empowered to seize the opportunities of the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G20 Initiatives<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Under the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, G20 members agreed on a number of vital initiatives that will lay the groundwork for global recovery\u2014initiatives whose impact, I hope, will be felt for decades to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We launched the Riyadh Initiative on the Future of the World Trade Organization to provide the necessary support for reforming the WTO\u2014under its auspices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
