At a cost 80 percent less than its traditional counterpart, two researchers from the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia in Spain have designed and patented a new type of transparent concrete that promises to revolutionize the construction industry by being produced at very fast rates and at a very low cost.

The researchers, Jose Albiol and Miguel Lopez, call their new innovation \u201cHtrans.\u201d The new transparent concrete allows 3D printed designs to be embedded into it, thus creating facades, sidewalks and other construction work.

Transparent concrete is a building material with light transmission properties, due to the optical-optical elements embedded within it, usually optical fibers.
Light passes through the concrete block from one end to the other, and this process produces a specific light on the surface.

Jos\u00e9 Albiol, a professor at the School of Construction Engineering at the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia, says of the new concrete: \u201cWe can 3D print any imagined design and incorporate it into the facade construction process.\u201d.

\u201cWith Hetrans, we can create structures with distinctive images in many different forms, such as a company logo, a reproduction of a work of art, a person's face or a city image, and we can also include illuminated devices to illuminate the structure,\u201c he says.

High efficiency and low cost

According to the researchers, this concrete is produced at a much lower cost than traditional transparent concrete, as transparent concrete is not new, but it is handmade, which directly affects its high final cost.

Htrans also includes reinforcing elements of different thicknesses, ensuring the strength of the concrete parts; the 3D printed parts with the design provide an internal substructure, ensuring the structural rigidity of the concrete as a whole, thus this configuration and the materials used ensure that the 3D appearance of the final product is optimized.

In addition, Hetrans can integrate permanent or intermittent lighting in any area, utilizing batteries that are charged by an external power source, as well as wireless chargers.
