In order to strengthen the role of the partnership between the Riyadh Development Authority and the city\u2019s residents, a competition has been launched today called \u00abWhat We Call It,\u00bb to select the names of the giant TBM tunnel boring machines that will carry out all the tunnel digging operations for the train. The Authority is launching this competition based on the great importance of the machines used in the project, and in accordance with the customary practice in major public transportation projects worldwide, by naming these giant machines with symbolic names.<\/p>\n
It is noteworthy that these machines were specially manufactured for the project in the largest factories and are currently being transported in preparation for installation at the work sites. A total of seven machines are being used in the project, and they are being used to excavate three-track tunnels within the project with a total length of 35 kilometers. The machines perform a range of key tasks simultaneously, including: digging at a depth of up to 30 meters underground, transporting soil, building the tunnel wall, and laying the railway track inside the tunnel. The length of each machine ranges between 90 and 120 meters, and the daily excavation volume for each machine is estimated at 200 trucks. The weight of each machine is approximately 1,528 tons.<\/p>\n
