Since 2030, estimates indicate that 60% of the world’s population will live in urban areas, and the workforce is still undergoing continuous transformations, especially after the pandemic. Architects have addressed these changes by implementing new features, modifying classic projects, and commercial and cultural ones.

Working from home

There have been clear changes in traditional workplaces over the past few years, after an unexpectedly long lockdown period that forced employees to find ways to integrate their offices at home.

Not everyone had an extra room, so they installed a desk in the corner of their living room or bedroom, or converted their dining table into a desk, without thinking about the work environment, privacy, and comfort. For this reason, after 2020, architects began implementing a radical change in how and where people live and work, especially in small housing projects.

Living together

As more cities grow, urban density remains a major concern for architects and urban planners: how can they ensure the privacy of residents while providing common and recreational spaces? This has put coexistence projects into the spotlight, illustrating that if designed correctly, building density does not necessarily mean overcrowding. Although this community-driven classification accommodates people who are not connected to the same housing unit, each receives their own home with its essential amenities, complementing shared areas. Additionally, multigenerational living has also returned to modern housing.

Sustainability

Sustainability and responsibility for achieving a sustainable environment remain important spirits in the practice of architecture; architects and urban planners are always wondering how the built environment can be environmentally and energy-efficient while maintaining its functional integrity.

Various solutions have been put in place to reduce the fact that the construction industry, to this day, accounts for approximately 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions (11% of which are caused by manufacturing).

Either by using local materials, which leads to blurring the boundaries between nature and architecture, or addressing the issue of sustainable living and the housing crisis.

Small housing

As the world’s population continues to evolve and move from place to place, employees are increasingly migrating to major cities, creating a new challenge in life: finding a reasonably priced and affordable place to live within these crowded major cities.

Some workers choose to settle far from city centers, benefiting from larger homes and quieter areas, but in return they have to spend more time and money on transportation.

In contrast, others choose to live in small city studios that provide the basic functions of a home, gaining proximity to commercial facilities, transportation, and recreational facilities in return.

In addition to the cultural changes and different lifestyles witnessed by the millennials such as owning different financial means or preferring small families, one of the recurring lifestyle trends worldwide in the last decade is small housing.

Although well-being has long been a top priority, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected how people value their physical, mental, and emotional well-being, leading to rapid and unprecedented changes in almost every aspect of life.

In architecture, residential projects have become integrated sports halls and natural elements, or use a specifically aesthetic interior design to create a sense of warmth and comfort, and promote physical and mental well-being.

In offices, employers were already concerned about the well-being of their teams and how to attract new talent to work in their physical locations long before the pandemic spread.
