The Ministry of Investment recently announced updated statistics on Foreign investments<\/a><\/strong><\/span> The system went live in the Kingdom after approximately 18 months of joint work between the Ministry, the General Authority for Statistics, and the Saudi Central Bank, and after confirming its alignment with international best practices, as outlined in the International Monetary Fund\u2019s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual.<\/p>\n

Analysis of data from more than 10,000 companies<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of the data update process, under the new methodology, the working group made strenuous efforts to analyze data from more than 10,000 foreign companies, based on more than 70,000 financial statements covering the years 2015 through 2022, This effort contributed to the updated results obtained using the new methodology, as follows:<\/p>\n

The stock of foreign direct investment stood at 413 billion riyals in 2015, 508 billion riyals in 2016, 514 billion riyals in 2017, and 562 billion riyals in 2018, in 2019, 576 billion riyals; in 2020, 585 billion riyals; in 2021, 670 billion riyals; and in 2022, 775 billion riyals.<\/p>\n

Foreign direct investment inflows amounted to 64 billion riyals in 2015, 111 billion riyals in 2016, 27 billion riyals in 2017, and 71 billion riyals in 2018, 32 billion riyals in 2019, 30 billion riyals in 2020, 100 billion riyals in 2021, and 122 billion riyals in 2022.<\/p>\n

The Kingdom's 16th-largest economy in the G20<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Under the new methodology, foreign direct investment stood at 775 billion riyals ($207 billion) in 2022, placing the Kingdom 16th among the G20 economies.<\/p>\n

Under the new methodology, foreign direct investment inflows reached approximately 122 billion riyals ($33 billion) in 2022, which is double the level of foreign direct investment inflows in 2015, placing the Kingdom 10th among the G20 economies in 2022. These updated figures correct the previous estimates published under the old methodology, which had put the figure at approximately 30 billion riyals ($8 billion).<\/p>\n

Creating the Best Investment Environment in the World<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On the occasion of the release of the updated data, His Excellency the Minister of Investment, Engineer Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih, that the Kingdom is committed to creating an investment environment that is considered the best in the world in all respects, including working toward a transparent, world-class methodology for compiling and calculating foreign direct investment statistics.<\/p>\n

His Excellency added: \u201cInvestors are entering the Saudi market with confidence because the Kingdom\u2019s economy is the largest in the Middle East and the Arab world, and one of the top twenty economies in the world, and because the Saudi market is characterized by rapid growth, and a strategic location, which provides an excellent platform for accessing dynamic and growing markets throughout the Middle East and beyond.\u201d.<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThe updated data, published in accordance with the new methodology, along with investor relations programs and initiatives, will enable us to respond to changes in the investment environment and make the necessary adjustments to attract more investors and maintain our relationship with them.\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that access to high-quality data is essential for monitoring investment performance, which accounted for approximately 25% of the Kingdom\u2019s gross domestic product in 2022, and is expected to reach 30% by 2030.<\/p>\n
