From bike-lined squares to sparkling canals, the Danish capital, Copenhagen, has stolen the spotlight this year, topping the list of the world\u2019s most livable cities published by the Intelligence Unit of *\u00abThe Economist<\/a><\/strong>\u00bb (EIU). The change at the top was no accident; the Scandinavian city scored highly in stability, infrastructure, and education, while its rival, Vienna, stumbled due to security concerns that ended its three-year reign at the top.<\/p>\n

Why did Copenhagen rise?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Stability and Minor Differences: The Danish capital scored nearly perfectly in the stability category, with low crime rates and an effective security system.<\/p>\n

Green and smart infrastructure\u2014including regular public transportation, an abundance of bike lanes, and an environmentally friendly road network\u2014has reinforced its leading position.<\/p>\n

Schools and universities meeting international standards: Substantial investment in the education system has strengthened the country\u2019s position in the index.<\/p>\n

Vienna Slips Back\u2026 But Remains on the Podium<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

With a slight drop in its stability score\u2014following the cancellation of Taylor Swift\u2019s summer 2024 concert for security reasons\u2014Vienna slipped to second place, tying with Zurich, Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Austrian capital maintains its global reputation thanks to a seamless transportation network and high-quality healthcare.<\/p>\n

Index Methodology
\nThe Economist unit evaluates 173 cities based on five main categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. This study is typically used by companies to assess incentives for their employees when relocating abroad.<\/p>\n

Europe Dominates, Australia Breaks the Monopoly<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Four European cities made it into the top five, while Melbourne was the only city from the Southern Hemisphere to join the elite group. Here are the top ten cities for 2025:<\/p>\n

The British capital slipped from 45th to 54th place due to a decline in stability, but it remains the best in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Honolulu, in the state of Hawaii, ranked 23rd, making it the most attractive U.S. city to live in this year.<\/p>\n

Canadian and Global Losses<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Calgary fell from fifth to eighteenth place due to a decline in its healthcare rating.<\/p>\n

Toronto dropped four spots to finish in 16th place.<\/p>\n

Damascus Is Still Suffering<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Syrian capital continues to suffer the effects of a long war, and thus ranked at the bottom of the list as the least livable city\u2014despite the ouster of the former regime and the change in power; the legacy of the conflict will take many more years to heal.<\/p>\n

\nParsali Bhattacharya, deputy industry director at *The Economist*, commented: \u00abGlobal livability has stabilized over the past year, but stability scores have declined slightly. In the United States, small and medium-sized cities outperformed their larger counterparts, such as New York, amid pressure on infrastructure and services.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Arabs on the Map: Al-Khobar Jumps 13 Places<\/h3>\n

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in health and education as part of Vision 2030, which has led to Khobar city<\/a><\/strong> A remarkable jump from 148th to 135th place\u2014the biggest improvement among Arab countries in the report. Abu Dhabi and Dubai also recorded slight improvements, confirming that improving quality of life has become a key part of economic diversification strategies in the Gulf.<\/p>\n
