It is considered one of the largest airports in the Middle East and Asia, The airport was built to accommodate the year-on-year increase in passenger numbers, particularly the pilgrims who travel to the Two Holy Mosques to perform the Hajj and Umrah. Its construction was part of the care and attention provided by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin AbdulazizAl Saud—may God preserve him—for the Kingdom’s civil aviation system in general and King Abdulaziz International Airport in particular, as the main gateway to the Two Holy Mosques. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, with the cost of the first phase estimated at more than twenty-seven billion million riyals.
The Importance of the Airport
The project will help accommodate the current and projected steady increase in air traffic through modern, high-tech facilities, It will also provide a large number of investment opportunities for the private sector, as well as thousands of job opportunities for citizens, and improve services for travelers based on customer service performance metrics.
The importance of the new airport stems from the strategic significance of the city of Jeddah, which occupies a prominent position on the map of cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, on the Red Sea coast, and serves as an air and sea gateway to the Two Holy Mosques, as well as its status as an economic and tourist hub that attracts people from both inside and outside the country. Consequently, the construction of the new airport project reinforces the economic, strategic, and historical significance of the “Bride of the Red Sea.”.
The Pride of the World's Airports
When the new airport was built, care was taken to equip it to be among the most advanced airports in the world in terms of its passenger terminal complex, control towers, and support services, and it features the largest air traffic control tower, standing at 136 meters, —one of the tallest control towers in the world—in addition to the western control support tower, all integrated equipment and systems, and information centers equipped with a fiber-optic cable network, and wide corridors that facilitate the delivery of services with the highest levels of performance and efficiency, as well as the construction of a highway network connecting it to the railway stations that will be built soon.

Project Phases
The King Abdulaziz New Airport project in Jeddah covers an area of more than 100 square kilometers and includes numerous facilities and infrastructure that serve the airport.
The project is divided into three phases: The first phase aims to serve 30 million passengers annually by early 2015, and the second phase aims to serve 43 million passengers annually by 2025, with work on it set to begin immediately upon completion of the first phase, and the third phase aims to serve 80 million passengers annually by 2035. The first phase of the project consists of two parallel contracts being carried out simultaneously. The first contract involves the construction of the passenger terminal complex, control towers, and support services. The passenger terminal covers an area of 670,000 square meters and is designed to accommodate approximately 30 million passengers annually, serving all domestic and international flights.
Fitting Out Passenger Lounges
The passenger terminals at the new airport project feature 220 check-in counters and 80 self-service kiosks to serve travelers, and also include 46 boarding gates—25 for international flights and 13 for domestic flights— in addition to eight dual-use gates and 94 jet bridges connecting directly to the aircraft, with two bridges per gate and three bridges for jumbo jets. The passenger terminals will also include one terminal for domestic flights and two terminals for international flights serving first-class and business-class passengers. The second contract of the first phase of the project includes aprons and taxiways, as well as roads, tunnels, and bridges leading to the airport, along with service centers, infrastructure, a passenger transit center, and support services. The project includes 25 kilometers of taxiways, 1.5 million square meters of aprons, three main utility centers, air conditioning systems and drainage channels, and all services related to the airport terminal. It also includes a 7-kilometer-long tunnel for the utilities and services network, which comprises electricity, water, wastewater, fire protection, sewage, and a stormwater drainage system.
Road Networks
The project is connected by a 20-kilometer network of roads leading to the airport, which includes an expressway, bridges, tunnels, and a multi-story parking garage with a capacity of 8,200 vehicles, a passenger transit center, and a railway station connecting to the Al-Haramain Railway line, which links Makkah and Madinah. In addition, the project includes one of the largest and most beautiful airport mosques, which is currently under construction and is considered part of the project. The mosque can accommodate 3,000 worshippers and covers an area of 6,700 square meters. The mosque is centrally located between the airport and residential neighborhoods, allowing it to serve worshippers who are not airport passengers as well.
Project Phases
The Saudi Binladin Group (the main contractor for the new King Abdulaziz Airport project in Jeddah) is overseeing the construction of the new airport, having previously provided an update on the latest developments regarding the King Abdulaziz Airport project in Jeddah, explaining that work is proceeding continuously around the clock and that a significant portion of the basic facilities, passenger terminals, parking lots, and the main air traffic control tower have been completed. The Saudi Binladin Group noted that the first phase of the new King Abdulaziz Airport will be completed by the end of 2015, and the project supervisor indicated that several factors will be taken into account in the design of the new airport to qualify it for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) (LEED), which is awarded to environmentally friendly projects that take environmental factors into account in the use and recycling of energy and water, as well as the quality of construction materials. Additionally, the project will utilize LED lighting technology (LED) lighting instead of traditional halogen lighting to reduce heat emissions, thereby saving energy, reducing cooling needs, and improving operational and maintenance performance. The new King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is ranked among the largest airports in the Middle East and Asia.

Reading time: 3 MinutesConstruction of the new King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, considered the gateway to the Two Holy Mosques, has made significant progress; it is one of the largest airports in the Middle East and Asia.
