He expressed his hope that the project would be completed in accordance with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State, and the Prime Minister, whose close monitoring of the various stages of the project has led to this advanced stage of completion.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Suleiti revealed that more than 80% of the port\u2019s major contracts have been finalized and put out to bid so far, and that 60 above-ground buildings have also been put out to bid.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that laying the final stone of the harbor basin wall ahead of schedule and within the allocated budget is a major achievement for the project, emphasizing that work is proceeding at full speed to ensure the project is completed on schedule\u2014or even ahead of schedule\u2014within the allocated budget, as dredging work in the harbor basin is expected to be completed in December 2014\u2014approximately one month ahead of schedule, He noted that once construction at the port is complete, it will be one of the largest and most modern ports in the region in terms of international standards, especially since it will be integrated with the economic zone, which will benefit the State of Qatar, the region, and the world at large.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Transportation explained that the port will become fully operational in December 2016, but the major milestone will be reached by the end of 2015, when water will be introduced into the port, enabling the first ship to enter by the end of 2015, Once work on the port is completed, it will be ready to accommodate the world\u2019s largest ships.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that the New Doha Port project is one of the largest infrastructure projects and covers a total area of 26 kilometers, in addition to the main port facilities. The cost of the port is estimated at approximately 27 billion riyals.<\/p>\n<p>It includes the Emirate Naval Forces base, the industrial canal for the Third Economic City, an administrative complex housing all support services, a medical center, a service center, a mosque, and a security center that encompasses public security, passport control, and civil defense. The new Port of Doha serves as a strong support for the old port, which is being developed day by day to reach a capacity of 700,000 to 800,000 containers annually, and the new port is part of Qatar National Vision 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase is expected to be completed in 2016, with a capacity of 2 million containers; with future expansions and the implementation of the second and third phases, its capacity will reach 6 million containers.
