For the first time, the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has received approval from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board to register an innovative carbon reduction project, which has been launched by one of SABIC\u2019s subsidiaries.<\/p>\n
The National Committee for the Clean Development Mechanism, chaired by Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Assistant Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources for Petroleum Affairs, had previously reviewed and approved the project. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a complex program by nature, requiring significant expertise in both technical and sustainability aspects, It also requires a commitment to transparency, good governance, and a high level of adherence to environmental, health, safety, and security standards. The program places project developers under local and international scrutiny through a series of public consultations and third-party audits. The project, being implemented by Jubail Fertilizers Company (Al-Biruni), encourages international organizations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions\u2014which are responsible for climate change and have been identified by the scientific community as the greatest threat to humanity. SABIC\u2019s project will work to upgrade the boiler at Al-Biruni over a period of 10 years with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 400,000 metric tons annually in Al-Biruni\u2019s operations, by utilizing modern technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy. On this occasion, SABIC Vice Chairman and CEO Eng. Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Madi emphasized that by joining the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program, SABIC has demonstrated its strong commitment to a low-carbon economy for sustainable development, a clean environment, and a better future. For his part, Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Mana, Executive Vice President of Fertilizers at SABIC and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Biruni, expressed his pride that Al-Biruni is the first company in the SABIC family to join this global system, noting that addressing climate change issues has recently become a fundamental element of sustainability, and that we are constantly working to reduce carbon emissions from our operations, with registration in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program being one of the means to achieve this. He said, \u201cWhen we launched the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program at SABIC, we were aware of the challenges and difficulties we would face,\u201d noting that the program is complex and fraught with challenges.
