His Excellency Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi, Minister of Commerce and Investment, affirmed that the establishment of an e-commerce council is a response to the global interest in e-commerce, and to unify the efforts of all government agencies toward creating a conducive environment for e-commerce in the Kingdom, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the national economy while facilitating business operations and keeping pace with international developments.
His Excellency said: ” Today’s approval by the Council of Ministers to form the E-Commerce Council contributes to the growth and strengthening of the e-commerce ecosystem, which is one of the strategic objectives of the National Transformation Program 2020 supporting the achievement of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 by creating an attractive, and one that motivates investors.” He emphasized that the Council will contribute to the development of the sector and enhance coordination of e-commerce-related efforts among all relevant stakeholders, as well as keeping pace with developments in the e-commerce market, proposing policies and legislation to improve infrastructure in coordination with government agencies, overseeing the E-Commerce Stimulus Program initiative, and ensuring the implementation of all initiatives by relevant government agencies.
Dr. Al-Qasabi stated that the Council will work to coordinate the efforts of all relevant parties, facilitate e-commerce activities, and ensure the effective implementation of the projects and recommendations of the E-Commerce Stimulus Program initiative, in addition to safeguarding consumer rights and enhancing trust in electronic transactions.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Commerce and Investment, in collaboration with the Digital Transformation Committee, has finalized the e-commerce strategy, and one of the Council’s primary tasks will be to oversee the implementation by relevant agencies of the initiatives outlined in this strategy. The Ministry has also finalized the e-commerce regulation, which is currently under review by the relevant authorities and aims to support and develop e-commerce activities, as well as to enhance trust in and the security of e-commerce transactions to increase their contribution to the national economy, and to provide the necessary protection for e-commerce transactions against fraud, deception, misinformation, and fraud.
