The National Center for Waste Management, the Eastern Province Secretariat, and the Saudi Investment Recycling Company, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding today to manage integrated waste management and recycling activities in the Eastern Province.
The memorandum was signed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Waste Management, Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadli, and His Excellency the Secretary of the Eastern Province, Engineer Fahd bin Mohammed Al-Jubeir, while Engineer Jeroen Vincent, CEO of the Saudi Investment Recycling Company, signed on behalf of the company.
Under this agreement, the three parties will begin coordinating efforts to implement a comprehensive strategy for the waste management sector in the Eastern Province, and achieve a set of strategic recycling goals by 2035, the most notable of which are recycling 81 percent of the annual municipal solid waste generated—which amounts to 2 million metric tons per year— in addition to recycling 60 percent of the annual construction and demolition waste generated, which amounts to approximately 1.5 million metric tons per year.
According to the memorandum of understanding, the National Waste Management Center and the Saudi Investment Company for Recycling will, as part of an integrated waste management system, construct modern facilities in the Eastern Province to recycle all types of waste, including municipal waste such as fertilizers, paper, plastics, and metals, in a safe manner that promotes environmental conservation in the region.
The memorandum of understanding is part of the National Waste Management Center’s efforts to increase the recycling rate by applying the latest technologies to invest in the waste sector, as well as stimulating investment in the waste sector and managing it through close cooperation with companies and entities specializing in waste management and treatment in a manner that contributes to environmental protection and sustainability.
In this regard, His Excellency Engineer Fahd bin Mohammed Al-Jubeir, Secretary-General of the Eastern Province Secretariat, emphasized that the signing of the memorandum of understanding is part of the Secretariat’s efforts to preserve and protect the environment and achieve its sustainability, given that economic growth, the continuous increase in population, and urban expansion have led to a rise in the volume of waste and industrial byproducts, which requires the adoption of advanced technical approaches to their treatment, Hence the importance of this agreement, which represents an extension of the Secretariat’s efforts to enhance environmental conditions.
In turn, Engineer Jeroen Vincent, CEO of the Saudi Investment Recycling Company, emphasized that the signing of this agreement represents an extension of the agreements the company has recently signed, which are part of efforts to develop the waste management sector through the establishment of modern recycling facilities, and there will be full coordination with the Eastern Province Municipality to ensure the success of the waste management initiative in a way that preserves the environment in the region, thereby supporting the sustainable preservation of public health in general.
