Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence in Italy, that short-term rentals of residential properties in the historic city center may be banned.
Nardella added that he wanted to take action against the “uncontrolled spread of short-term rentals” and protect the city center from the “problem of apartments being overcrowded with tourists.”
Under his proposal, new short-term lease agreements would be banned. Tax breaks would be offered to encourage long-term rentals.
It is worth noting that Florence’s city center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
The Italian government is currently working on a bill to regulate and monitor short-term rentals throughout the country.
