The percentage of Saudi home ownership increased from 60% in 2010 to 62% in 2011, and the total number of dwellings occupied by Saudi families amounted to about 3 million dwellings, most of which are apartments, amounting to about one million apartments, representing 34,3% of the total number of Saudi dwellings, followed by popular houses with about 7,805.7 thousand houses representing 26.9%, then residential villas with about 7,763.7 thousand dwellings representing 25.5%, then floors in villas with about 1,326.1 thousand floors representing 10.9%.
According to information issued by the International Housing Finance Information Network, the number of dwellings occupied by Saudi families in Riyadh city reached 493.9 thousand dwellings occupied by 494.1 thousand families (3.32 million citizens) in 2010. The number of dwellings owned by Saudi families residing in Riyadh city amounted to about 238.5 thousand dwellings, which means that the percentage of Saudi families owning their homes in Riyadh city amounted to 48.3%, while the rest of the families are mostly renting their homes (45%), and a few of them reside in housing provided by the employer (6.2%).
While the percentage of Saudi households owning their home in Dammam reached 42.4%, and in Jeddah 42.6%. While the percentage in the cities of Mecca and Medina amounted to 54.5% and 55%, respectively. It is noted that the percentage of households owning their homes gradually increases the smaller the city size and the smaller the population. It is close to 100% in small Saudi governorates.
The number of Saudi households owning their homes in all Saudi governorates reached about 1.8 million households representing 60% of the total number of Saudi households in 2010, while the number of Saudi households renting was about 1 million households representing 34.8%, and the number of Saudi households living in employer-provided housing was about 135.8 thousand households representing 4.5% of the total number of Saudi households.
The results of the general census of housing and dwellings showed that there are about 541.4 thousand dwellings occupied by Saudi families built of brick, tile, mud, stone or other (including tents). While the number of dwellings occupied by non-Saudi households of these types of building materials amounted to 478.6 thousand dwellings, meaning that the number of Saudi dwellings built with medium and poor types is about 62.8 thousand more than the number of foreign dwellings built with these types of building materials, due to the high density of the non-Saudi population in such types of housing.
