Over the past few days, the capital and various cities and suburbs across the Kingdom have experienced heavy rains that caused some loss of life and property and exposed the poor state of the drainage system... Rain continued to fall in Riyadh and its suburbs for several days, affecting the governorates of Al-Kharj, Al-Saih, Al-Dalm, Al-Hayathim, Na’jan, Al-Salamiyah, Al-Yamamah, Al-Dabiah, Al-Hazm, Al-Ain, Al-Khabi, Ma’wan, Al-Aqimi, Al-Rafai’, Al-Tawdihiyah, and Al-Raghib, causing some wadis and ravines to fill up, while the sky remains overcast and poised for more rain, amid forecasts that these rain clouds will persist.
The rains exposed poor drainage resulting from inadequate preparations, as the rain continued to fall for many hours. Civil Defense forces made significant efforts to clear blockages and rescue some of those trapped by the flash floods and heavy rains.
The rains turned some streets in Riyadh and other cities into pools of water; the valley beds filled up, and tunnels became blocked, causing large amounts of water to accumulate, causing a number of commercial establishments to collapse and several homes to cave in, which damaged many vehicles and resulted in a number of injuries and 11 deaths, in addition to cases of missing citizens and residents.
For his part, Colonel Abdullah Al-Arabi Al-Harthi, Director of the Media Department and spokesperson for the Civil Defense, said that the majority of reports were received by Civil Defense centers in the southwestern neighborhoods of the capital. He added that the body of a Yemeni girl was later found; she had been swept away by the Wadi Namar flood while she was with her father, while the search for a number of missing persons is still ongoing, The number of stranded individuals who were rescued reached 98, as follows: 35 in Riyadh, 14 in Dhurma, 10 in Harimla, 3 in Ramah, 1 in Marat, 3 in Thadig, 30 in Al-Mazahmiyah, and 2 in Al-Dir’iya
