
The BigBig 5 exhibition, considered the largest construction and building event, was held in Jeddah from March 7 to 10 . It was inaugurated by the Mayor of Jeddah Hani Abu Ras with the participation of more than 600 exhibitors representing various Saudi, regional, and international companies and institutions, with international exhibitors accounting for more than 70%.
The latest construction and building technologies
The exhibition, held at the Jeddah Forums and Events Center, gave visitors the opportunity to learn more about the latest global and local construction and building products and technologies; with international exhibitors accounting for more than 70% of the total exhibitors at the event, showcasing the latest cutting-edge technologies and innovative ideas, some of which were being introduced to the Saudi construction market for the first time.
For his part, Nathan Wu, Director of Events at DMG Events, the organizer of the Big 5 exhibition in Jeddah, noted that "some of these technologies are being showcased in Saudi Arabia for the first time. This is a great opportunity for visitors to see the new construction products and technologies available, which can give them a significant competitive advantage in their future projects." One of the highlights of this year’s event is the offering of a series of accredited educational workshops available to visitors free of charge.
International Federation of Engineers Contracts
Andrew Jones, Partner and Head of Construction Practice for the Middle East at Dentons Law Firm, also spoke, emphasizing that the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) contracts in Saudi Arabia will be accepted by international parties in the market or those seeking to enter the market. There had been concerns that contractors would be required to agree to unfavorable terms to work on state-sponsored projects particular; however, the adoption of a localized version of the FIDIC contracts will encourage parties to review and negotiate the terms, with the hope of further reassuring contractors regarding contractual rights and risk management."
Factories and Building Materials
Among the other key events at the Big 5 exhibition in Jeddah are the concrete zone and the outdoor area for factories, machinery, and vehicles, which allowed visitors to learn about the latest concrete technologies, gain hands-on experience with machinery and equipment, and watch live demonstrations featuring earthmoving equipment, lifting equipment, and tower cranes.

On the sidelines of the Big 5 exhibition, a number of seminars and workshops covering various topics, most notably sustainable construction and design; in light of efforts by projects in Saudi Arabia to conserve energy and water, promote renewable resources, and raise awareness of the need to implement numerous activities to ensure that eco-friendly design complies with LEED standards.
