“The exhibition seeks to develop the potential and opportunities of the agricultural sector within the Kingdom by supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly projects and ideas and developing them using the latest technologies to keep pace with and support the Kingdom's vision strategically, and provide a platform that helps pioneers and owners of ideas locally and internationally, provides their needs and enables them to cooperate and create effective projects that help the country achieve sustainable food security and independence,” Mohammed Al Sheikh, Director General of Marketing and Corporate Communication at Riyadh Exhibitions Company Limited, told Al-Watan.

24.5 billion riyals to develop and upgrade agriculture sectors

“The Kingdom began several years ago to prioritize the development of its agricultural sector by providing financial support, discovering new types of crops and integrating advanced technologies into the sector,” he said, noting that “these steps led to a fourfold growth in domestic food production between 1980 and 1990, which is considered a great success.” “Now, through research and development initiatives, the government has been able to help farmers double their production without worrying about scarce water sources, and to keep pace with and support the vision's goals, the leadership approved a 24.5 billion riyals project to develop and upgrade the Kingdom's agriculture, water and environment sectors in line with global progress standards,” he said. Priority to develop food reserves “As part of the strategic direction shown by the Kingdom in its vision, the protection of its vital resources is imperative to build an ambitious and effectively governed country. To support this, the government has prioritized the development of food reserves, the promotion of aquaculture, and partnerships with countries with abundant natural resources, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has cooperated with the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, the General Grain Corporation and the Agricultural Development Fund to strengthen national capabilities to ensure sustainable food security,” Al-Sheikh said. “Under this project, an effective program for developing the food sector, reducing waste and building an alert system to monitor food shortages has been established, while the concerned authorities have achieved great successes in the field of fisheries farming due to the increase in marine fisheries and the growth of total production, and it is expected that fisheries will contribute to the development of the national economy,” he said.
