The Ministry of Culture , represented by the Jeddah Historical Program, launched yesterday the Jeddah Historical Waterfront Development Project, which comes within the "Reviving Historic Jeddah" project , launched by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister - may God protect him - in September 2021.

His Highness Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture, expressed his thanks and gratitude to His Highness the Crown Prince for his unlimited support for preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating historical sites.

He explained that the project to develop the historic Jeddah waterfront – which will last for two years – will bring the sea back to the country, specifically the historic port of Al-Bunt, and will contribute to developing a waterfront according to high and sustainable standards.

The Minister of Culture affirmed that the project will take into account all cultural, heritage and environmental aspects of the region, as part of the ongoing efforts to present it as a global tourist destination, in order to achieve the pillars of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to build a vibrant society, a thriving economy and an ambitious nation.

It is noted that the project to develop the historic Jeddah waterfront has begun work in its first phase by re-excavating the sea area, which was filled in as a result of urban expansion in past decades. In the second phase, the pollution of the Arbaeen Lake will be addressed, and infrastructure will be developed to build an urban area and a waterfront. The third phase of the project includes building a marina for yachts, green spaces, pedestrian bridges, and public facilities, to create a sustainable urban fabric in the city.

The Jeddah Historical Development Program aims to invest in the history and cultural elements of the region and transform them into economic tributaries, and to develop its living environment to be an attractive center for business and an incubator for cultural projects and creative production, in addition to highlighting heritage landmarks and enhancing their importance, as well as achieving sustainable development by creating an integrated environment with green spaces and vibrant waterfronts.
