What do the Cityscape scenes tell us? .. When a Vision for Development Meets Community Awareness

M. Mohammed Al-Dosari

While following the scenes from Cityscape Global Exhibition through official channels, I was greatly impressed by the level of effective communication the National Housing Company provided to the public, Their approach to simplifying information and raising awareness about the criteria for choosing the right home for families reflects a mature trend in the sector toward engaging residents and empowering them to make more informed housing decisions.

One of the most notable aspects of the interview segments was the question of prioritizing housing:

Does the selection process start with price? Or location? Or design? Or amenities?

Notably, location and services ranked at the top of the list of priorities, reflecting a growing awareness among residents of the importance of the surrounding urban environment and the fact that a housing unit cannot be evaluated in isolation from its surroundings. Although price and design remain important factors in housing decisions, the findings showed that the strongest preference is for location and quality of services, as these are considered to have the greatest impact on the housing experience and quality of life.

From a planning perspective, the availability and quality of services—such as schools, parks, walking paths, and daily amenities—are crucial to the success of any urban development project.

The proper distribution of services improves quality of life, reduces the need for long-distance travel, fosters social interaction, and enhances the neighborhood’s long-term appeal and sustainability. It also directly impacts residents’ satisfaction and their decision to choose one development over another.

The overall picture reflects a significant development in the Kingdom: a more mature real estate development sector, a more informed public, and a shared vision for comprehensive residential neighborhoods that prioritize quality of life and enhance the housing experience for Saudi families.
