Riyadh Chamber of Commerce: Seventy Years of Service
The Annual Reception: From Embarrassment to Excellence
Riyadh—Mohammed Jamos: The annual business community gala organized by Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, last Wednesday evening, was not merely a formal gathering; rather, it was a historic milestone embodying the values of communication, camaraderie, and affection that have prevailed among the Chamber’s members and staff for seven decades, ever since the Chamber was founded in November 1961. This well-established institutional tradition serves as a solid foundation from which the Chamber’s various committees launch initiatives to support the Kingdom’s burgeoning business activity.
This annual gathering serves as a comprehensive platform that is not limited to the exchange of expertise among industry leaders and decision-makers, but extends to become a lifeline for young entrepreneurs, Amid this gathering, clear and inspiring messages are conveyed, affirming that «this is the golden age,» along with an explicit call for young people to capitalize on the many opportunities created by Vision 2030 to become active participants in development.
One of the event’s noble goals is to connect the first generation of investors with the rising generation, to exchange experiences and opinions, and to build a network of investment relationships that contribute to creating unique and exceptional opportunities under the governance and automation frameworks adopted by government agencies. The Riyadh Chamber’s annual gala is a living testament to the integration of generations and the collaboration of sectors, ensuring the Kingdom’s continued economic leadership regionally and globally.
How the idea for the annual gala began
The idea for the Riyadh Chamber’s annual gala dates back to the 1980s, a period that witnessed the peak of the Kingdom’s economic boom and intense commercial activity, The country regularly hosted foreign trade delegations to participate in joint committee meetings, in which active members of the Saudi private sector took part.
It was customary to schedule these committee meetings immediately after the end of the summer vacation. It was observed that Saudi members, having recently returned from their vacations, were preoccupied with greeting one another and exchanging friendly pleasantries, which led to a decline in the attention given to foreign delegations and guests as required by the norms of courtesy and hospitality, which caused some diplomatic and organizational embarrassment.
To address this situation tactfully, the Chamber’s Board of Directors, after consultation and discussion, decided to hold the «Annual Reception» on a suitable date immediately following the summer break. The goal was simple and effective: to enable members to renew their commitment and welcome one another separately.
Thus, this organizational gathering evolved into a distinguished annual tradition and a commendable custom—not only for Chamber members, both businessmen and businesswomen, to get to know one another and exchange experiences, but also because this tradition became a standard practice emulated by many other chambers of commerce in the Kingdom.
