Upon completion of the rebar work for the first-floor columns, the supervising engineer then arrives to inspect the rebar for the columns and ensure that it conforms to the approved project plans. If any issues are found with the rebar, the contractor is notified to correct them. If the issues are significant, the engineer should return to inspect the work again, and a report must be prepared by the engineer confirming acceptance of this phase.
The contractor installs «spacers»—plastic pieces that create a gap between the rebar and the wood. Afterward, the columns are enclosed and the strings are tightened to ensure they are perfectly straight. The concrete must be supplied by a company specializing in ready-mix concrete and must be of standard 350 grade or as specified in the project specifications.
When the pump arrives at the site, the columns are thoroughly sprayed with water. Concrete is then poured immediately, and the contractor must be instructed to use a mechanical vibrator during the pouring process.
One day after the concrete is poured, the contractor removes the formwork from the columns. In the summer, it is advisable to place burlap around the columns to help retain moisture longer; the columns are then sprayed with water twice daily for seven consecutive days.
-GRC is a mixture of white cement, fiberglass, and white sand. These components are mixed using special machinery in specialized factories. It is lightweight and the ability to create all types of decorative finishes and architectural solutions with minimal effort—especially when addressing deficiencies or imperfections in the appearance of a building’s exterior facades— it is fire-resistant and impact-resistant, and paint colors can be customized as desired. It is considered an aesthetic enhancement to the building, though its high cost is a drawback.
Cement-based decorative elements consist of a mixture of cement, sand, and some reinforcing steel. Their disadvantages include their heavy weight and the tendency for surface cracks to appear; however, they are characterized by lower material costs compared to GRC products, Note that both cement decorative panels and GRC are installed mechanically using screws and nails. It is recommended that these materials be installed by specialized contractors, and a warranty should be provided for the work performed.
