The development work on Thumamah Road (eastern section) continues, as part of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City’s efforts to improve the efficiency of the road network and enhance traffic flow on one of the vital axes in the capital, where construction work is being carried out that includes a bridge and a tunnel at the intersection of Thumamah Road with Al-Sahaba Road.

Concurrent with the construction work, a traffic diversion will be activated at the intersection starting from September 12, 2026. This diversion will involve changing traffic on the road parallel to Al-Thumama Road from the north side, with 3 lanes in each direction, while providing a service road for the adjacent buildings to ensure the continuity of traffic during the implementation of the tunnel, bridge and surface intersection works. In addition, alternative roads will be prepared and directional signs will be placed to ensure the safety of road users and regulate the flow of vehicles, according to an integrated traffic management plan, in coordination with the concerned authorities, in order to enhance connectivity between the neighborhoods and neighboring areas.

The Thumama Road Development Project (Eastern Section) is part of the “Third Group” of the program to develop ring roads and main roads. It extends for a length of 8 km and includes the construction of 3 bridges, 3 tunnels, and 4 main intersections, including Airport Road, Saeed Bin Zaid Road, Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Road, and Al Sahaba Road. It aims to increase the capacity for more than 200,000 vehicles per day, improve the level of traffic service, and reduce travel time and traffic delays.

The program for developing ring roads and main axes contributes to enhancing the transportation system in the city of Riyadh, and preparing it to be a major center in providing sustainable transportation and logistics services in the Middle East region, by implementing and developing more than 500 km of the road network in the capital, through adding new roads, raising the level of existing main axes, and activating their connection with each other.
