(Natural gas) is the most widely used fuel for electricity generation in the Kingdom

Natural gas accounted for the largest share among the main fuel sources used in electricity generation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (based on calorific value) in 2013, at 46 %.

According to the annual report issued by the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority for the year 1434/1435 (2013), crude oil ranked second among the fuels used in electricity generation, accounting for (29 %). Diesel ranked third with a share of (15 %), and heavy fuel oil ranked fourth with a share of (10 %).

The report stated that electricity production in the Kingdom during the past year, 2013, reached (256.688) gigawatt-hours, an increase of (6.8 %) compared to the year (2012), while the number of subscribers rose by (6.1 %) to reach (7,142,816) subscribers.

The annual report of the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority stated that the residential sector ranked first in terms of the number of subscribers, with (5,685,355) subscribers, whose consumption of total electricity production (126,112,997) gigawatt-hours, representing 48%.
