Warning about disconnecting service to residential and commercial units

The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has clarified that some residential and commercial unit owners are disconnecting electric service to subscribers on their own when they are late in paying their rent.

It indicated that this disconnection is done without relying on judicial rulings or orders from the administrative authorities in the emirates of the regions, and without referring to the company, which is a clear violation of the regulations and is punishable by the perpetrator, even if the lease contract concluded between the owner and the tenant includes a clause that stipulates the right of the landlord to disconnect the electric service She pointed out that the company's regulations, approved by the Electricity and Dual Production Regulatory Authority, regulated the mechanisms for delivering and disconnecting electric service to subscribers and assigned the task to SEC alone to do so.

SEC stressed that no one has the right to disconnect service from subscribers and cut off their electricity for any reason whatsoever, noting that some official bodies have the right to request disconnection of service from the company, such as regional emirates, judicial authorities and civil defense, provided that the disconnection is within the items specified by law.
