King Abdullah Port passes more than 1.3 million containers and enters into alliances to increase capacity

In 2015, Ports Development Company succeeded in making its mark on the private sector in port management and development through its achievements in the operation, management, and development of King Abdullah Port, where the company worked to increase the port’s capacity by adding a fourth berth in May 2015, raising its capacity to over 2.7 million containers in line with the port’s development policies, The company also handled 1,307,017 standard containers.

In the same vein, Engineer Abdullah bin Mohammed Hamidaldin, Managing Director of Port Development Company,  highlighted the significant role of the port’s advanced capabilities, including berths with a depth of 18 meters, vast storage areas, and state-of-the-art equipment, enabling maritime transport to contribute to the Kingdom’s economic development by providing the best services to facilitate the movement and storage of containers, as well as imports and exports.

It is worth noting that King Abdullah Port has attracted a number of international companies to enhance operational efficiency, having signed a partnership agreement with the NYK Group, one of the world’s largest automotive shipping companies, to operate the port’s first roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) terminal, which has a capacity of 300,000 vehicles per year, starting in the third quarter of 2016. This will make it the first of its kind operated by the NYK Group in the region under joint management. Contracts have been signed with Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, and the United Arab Shipping Company.
