The kitchen is considered the most complex part of the house, as it requires a great deal of organization and attention to health considerations, in addition to a range of other design elements. It is not merely a room for storing and preparing food; rather, it occupies a distinctive and important place in the layout of the home.
Design and Types of Kitchens
First: When thinking about designing a kitchen for a new home, we must take sufficient time to consider various aesthetic and decorative factors during the planning phase, as the kitchen is a practical part of the home and a long-term investment, therefore, sufficient space must be allocated for it, and proper planning must be taken into account, as the kitchen is not just a place for cooking, ?
We must also consider the amount of natural light and ventilation it receives, ensure it is close to the dining room and service entrance, away from the bedrooms, and overlooks the children’s play area in terms of its location within the home.
Second: Interior Design. The kitchen design should be based on the family’s needs for storage space and kitchen appliances. When designing the kitchen, we must ensure that the perimeter of the work triangle is between 3.7 and 6.7 meters (if we draw a line connecting the sink, stove, and refrigerator, we get this triangle). Ensure that the entry and exit paths to and from the kitchen do not pass through the work triangle. Make sure that the doors of the cabinets, refrigerator, oven, and all other appliances open away from the work triangle. Also, note that the distance between the lower and upper cabinets should be at least 45 cm, and the appropriate height for lower cabinets is 88 cm above the kitchen floor, based on the average height of family members.
Ensure there is at least 90 cm of space on one side of the sink and 70 cm on the other, and that there are no appliances or other kitchen equipment in these areas. It is also preferable to use a double-bowl sink to make work easier, and it should ideally be placed in front of a window for ventilation.
Designate a shelf for electrical appliances that includes electrical outlets and is located away from heat sources such as the oven and water sources to prevent electrical shorts, God willing. For example, the refrigerator should be separated from the oven by at least one cabinet. Ensure that electrical wiring is in place and suitable for various kitchen appliances, whether essential or potential additions. In the next issue, we’ll take a tour inside the kitchen to explore some suggested ideas for kitchen design and layout.
The kitchen is not just a place for cooking
The kitchen is the most versatile space in the home; it is not just a place for cooking, but also a place to eat and a hub for family gatherings. Therefore, according to experts, it is essential to pay attention to all the details—both big and small—when choosing kitchen decor. Before beginning to draft a design or layout for a new kitchen, we should take the time to carefully and thoroughly assess and review our needs… Since fitting out a new kitchen is a long-term investment, it is always best not to rush through the process of creating the right layout for this kitchen without careful consideration, because it is difficult to correct the mistakes that may result from this haste and poor planning—mistakes that are often extremely costly, in addition to causing constant inconvenience to everyone who uses the kitchen.
Kitchen Decor
I will outline some important points to consider when designing a kitchen: determining the amount of sunlight and fresh air it receives, ensuring it is close to the living room and away from any bedrooms, The work triangle area should be designed with a limited space—no more than 6.6 meters and no less than 3.6 meters—and care should be taken to ensure that the entry and exit paths do not interfere with the work triangle.
Pendant lighting is suitable for the food preparation table or the dining counter, and its height above the table should preferably be 75 cm. Recessed lighting is installed below the level of the upper cabinets to illuminate the prep counter with attractive lighting; in this case, low-voltage lighting is used, and the countertop is allocated a width of approximately 60 cm.
Kitchen Lighting
In general, lighting is an important element of the decor in any room of the house. Today, kitchen lighting is part of its decor, as it gives the space a unique look… In other words, a pendant light hanging from the ceiling will not only serve its intended purpose but will also add an aesthetic touch.
First, we must ensure that kitchen lighting is protected against various factors, including heat and humidity… This is achieved by using a protective cover for the light fixture to prevent oil and steam buildup… The cover should be easy to clean. Typically, a kitchen requires several types of lighting in addition to natural light, such as general kitchen lighting, which is centered in the middle of the kitchen ceiling and illuminates most of the kitchen.
Kitchen Layouts
Kitchen layouts, as determined by their floor plan, are categorized into straight-line kitchens; kitchens with two opposing walls, such as L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens; and island and peninsula-style kitchens.
We choose the first design (the straight-line kitchen (in residential units with limited space, as well as in kitchens open to the living room, where part of the living room is designated for a small, integrated kitchen. We choose to arrange the fixtures along two parallel straight lines (a kitchen with two opposing walls), which is a desirable solution for rectangular kitchens provided their width is at least 2.40 m.
Given the limited space available in this type of kitchen, a simple design is preferred to maximize space, incorporating sliding doors, The design follows an “L” shape for square or rectangular kitchens, with units arranged along two walls forming a corner that is not obstructed by any doors or tall units.
As for kitchens larger than 15 square meters, we can opt for an island-style layout. This design consists of parallel rectangles arranged in the shape of an island in the center of the kitchen, where the stove, oven, sink, and some units with large countertops are grouped together . A drawback of this design is the need for frequent movement around these units, which results in wasted energy.
In spacious homes, the kitchen can be designed in a peninsula layout, which resembles the island layout but incorporates a straight-line unit opposite one side of the island to streamline the workflow and minimize the work triangle. This design is characterized by its spacious, aesthetically pleasing form.
