Saudi banks have reassured all their customers, announcing that their accounts are safe from cyberattacks by the Shamoun 2 virus and ransomware. They confirmed that their operational systems and electronic applications have not been subject to any breaches or damage.
Talaat Hafez, Secretary-General of the Banking Media and Awareness Committee and spokesperson for Saudi banks, the news and rumors recently circulating on some social media platforms and websites regarding certain banks and their systems being subjected to cyberattacks by these two viruses, which allegedly caused damage and disruption to their internal systems.
Hafez affirmed the security of the banks“ internal systems, websites, and electronic services, including transactions conducted through so-called ”online" services via the Internet, emphasizing that Saudi banks maintain sufficient transparency to inform their customers and the public about any breaches or cyberattacks should they occur, God forbid.
Hafiz called on customers of Saudi banks to trust the precautions and protective measures taken to counter such attacks, and to rely on information from trusted sources, ignoring the misinformation that circulates from time to time, whether on social media or from unknown sources, while warning all customers against opening links, apps, or emails from unknown sources to avoid falling victim to financial fraud and the theft of personal information and banking data.
