Aramco topped the list of the world’s largest oil companies in 2012, according to a recent ranking by Forbes magazine of global companies based on their production capacity, regardless of whether they are publicly traded or not. Forbes based its production volume estimates on data from Wood Mackenzie, with the figures used in the ranking representing combined oil and gas production. Aramco ranked first with a production capacity of 12.5 million barrels per day, and the company generates daily revenue of up to $1 billion. It owns the Ghawar field, located in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom, a giant field capable of producing five million barrels per day. Russia’s Gazprom ranked second with a production capacity of 9.7 million barrels per day. Controlled by the government in Moscow, it is the world’s largest gas producer, with annual profits exceeding $40 billion. In third place was the National Iranian Oil Company with a production capacity of 6.4 million barrels per day. ExxonMobil came in fourth with a production capacity of 5.3 million barrels per day; it is the largest U.S. oil company, with annual profits of approximately $40 billion. In fifth place was China’s PetroChina, with a production capacity of 4.4 million barrels per day; it is the largest Chinese oil company and is controlled and managed by the government. Sixth place went to British Petroleum, the largest British oil company with assets around the world, with a production capacity of 4.1 million barrels per day. Royal Dutch Shell, one of Europe’s major oil companies, ranked seventh with a production capacity of 3.9 million barrels per day. Eighth place went to Pemex, owned by the Mexican government, with a production capacity of 3.6 million barrels per day, followed in ninth place by Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company, with a production capacity of 3.5 million barrels per day, which acquired Atlas Petroleum in 2010 for $4.3 billion. In tenth place was the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation with a production capacity of 3.2 million barrels per day.
