Qatar's Barwa reports 21% profit increase

Posted in

Qatari real estate company Barwa announced a 21 percent increase in its net profits for 2013, following a financial bailout last summer.

Last June, the publicly traded company accepted $7.1 billion from the Qatari government-run company Diyar, which owns 45 percent of the company. Shortly thereafter, the company announced a decline in its first-half earnings, citing delays in certain transactions.

This week’s announcement points to a significant increase in the company’s net profit in late 2013.

Barwa recorded net profits of 1.4 billion Qatari riyals ($384.5 million) in 2013, an increase of 1.1 billion riyals over the previous year, according to the announcement.

However, the announcement does not include figures for the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, data from Thomson Reuters shows that the company posted net profits of more than 900 million riyals in the fourth quarter of the year. This compares to 392 million riyals during the same period the previous year.
