The Municipality of Dubai the issuance of the first building permit for a private residential villa using 3D printing technology.
The municipality said in a statement: “The construction of the villa will be a world-first, involving the 3D printing of models and structures up to 4 meters tall in a single session,” noting that 100% locally manufactured concrete mixes will be used to print the villa, and it is expected to be completed in October of this year.
This step reinforces the aspirations of the Emirate of Dubai and supports the objectives of the Dubai Strategy in afor3D printing, and to increase the percentage of 3D-printed buildings in the emirate to at least (25%) by 2030.
Engineer Mariam Al Muhairi, Executive Director of the Building Regulation and Licensing Authority at the Dubai Municipality, said: “The Dubai Municipality has granted the first license for the construction of a private villa using 3D printing technology in the emirate, which will encourage property owners, real estate developers, investors, engineers, and construction companies to adopt and use the technology in their construction projects.”
3D printing
She added that the municipality is working to provide the necessary support and facilities to regulate the use of this innovative technology in construction and building projects in the Emirate of Dubai, noting that construction using 3D printing technology offers numerous economic and environmental benefits, including reduced costs and shorter construction timelines by streamlining the construction supply chain, the ease of constructing structures and models with complex shapes, the ability to use sustainable and recycled raw materials in construction, as well as environmental protection by reducing the amount of waste generated by construction projects.
She explained that 3D printing technology is faster and more precise in construction than traditional methods, and safer as well, since it does not require a large number of workers on-site.
It is worth noting that the Municipality of Dubai launched a series of engineering activities specializing in 3D printing technology last year, including consulting services for construction engineering using this technology, construction contracting services utilizing 3D printing, and the production of concrete specifically designed for construction using this technology.
