The Heritage Authority, in collaboration with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and the Riyadh Region Municipality, the registration and designation of 180 landmarks of modern urban heritage in the city of Riyadh, as part of its efforts to register modern urban heritage and preserving it, as one of the components of the Kingdom’s cultural identity.
The project includes buildings and structures that represent landmark milestones in the history of Riyadh during the 20th century and have contributed to shaping its urban character, documenting the city’s growth phases and developmental transformations. These structures have become architectural landmarks that embody the urban memory of the capital and reflect the evolution of construction and urban planning during that period.

The work included documenting the sites and listing them in the Urban Heritage Register, as well as installing standardized informational plaques bearing a QR code, which helps raise awareness of their heritage value and enhances their presence in the urban landscape.
The registration of these sites is an extension of the Heritage Authority’s programs to inventory and document all urban heritage sites across the Kingdom’s various regions, thereby contributing to the creation of a national registry that documents their historical and cultural value, and supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 in preserving national heritage and highlighting it as a cultural and developmental resource.

It is worth noting that modern urban heritage is a component of the national cultural heritage. It includes buildings and structures of historical and architectural value that document the phase of urban transformation the Kingdom underwent during the 20th century and reflect the evolution of construction and planning methods, as well as the associated social, cultural, and economic dimensions, making it an integral part of the Kingdom’s urban memory.
