The Civil Aviation Authority announced that it has taken a series of immediate measures to review domestic flight ticket prices. In a statement, the Authority said, “It has recently observed a change in the pricing patterns of certain categories of airline tickets and has been closely monitoring information circulating regarding domestic airfare prices.”
The Authority confirmed that its measures will result in a review of the air transport pricing structure and an increase in seating capacity and the number of flights, with the aim of ensuring affordable prices for passengers and enhancing competitiveness in the air transport sector.
Last year, the Saudi government announced plans to transform the Kingdom into a global hub for transportation and logistics by 2030, with the goal of attracting more than 330 million passengers annually.
The National Strategy for Transportation and Logistics aims to invest 500 billion riyals ($133.32 billion) as part of an economic policy to create jobs and reduce dependence on oil revenues. The government wants to increase direct international flights to 250 from the current 99, in part to boost the emerging tourism sector and transform the Kingdom into a major commercial hub.
A tenfold increase in passenger numbers would mean a surge in transit traffic
