Architectural design between innovation and tradition
Hisham Al-Qasim
<The balance of traditional and modern materials in architects" designs in Saudi Arabia is a result of the region's architectural history, with many ancient buildings designed using traditional materials such as stone, wood, mud bricks, stained glass, and stonework. By incorporating modern technologies into their designs, architects seek to improve the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings. Modern technologies are also used in the design of tall and high-rise buildings, for example, modern materials such as steel and glass are used to create glass facades and metal columns that reinforce the overall structure of the building.Sustainability is the definition of sustainability. <Sustainability is an important factor in the designs of architects in the Kingdom, as they seek to improve the environmental performance of buildings by utilizing modern technology in the design of windows, roofs, air conditioning and lighting. Eco-friendly materials such as recycled wood, green concrete and recycled cement are also being used. <The balance of traditional and modern materials in architects" designs also requires a focus on the design context, where the environment surrounding the building is studied to ensure that the design is in line with the local climate, culture, and traditions. Attention is also paid to the cultural and historical details of the region, such as the use of traditional carvings and decorations in facades, columns, and doors.
In general, architects in Saudi Arabia strive to design unique and attractive buildings that reflect the cultural identity of the region and are in line with the modern needs of society, while maintaining environmental and cultural sustainability. This is done by combining modern and traditional design and using appropriate materials and modern technologies to optimize the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings. Saudi Arabia is a major center for Islamic architecture and Arabic traditions, and this heritage is applied in the architects' designs in a sensitive and innovative way, helping to preserve and enhance the region's cultural identity in modern designs.
