Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah has seen the implementation of a series of development projects aimed at rehabilitating old neighborhoods and sites of historical value, transforming them into integrated urban destinations that combine improving residents" quality of life, enriching the visitor experience, and preserving urban and cultural heritage of the city. Notable among these were the development projects in the Al-Mughayslah neighborhood, the Quba area, the Sayyid al-Shuhada area, and other sites and destinations, as distinctive models for urban infrastructure development that leverage the historical and cultural assets of the area, thereby contributing to urban and tourist experiences that reflect the authentic character of Madinah.
The development project for the Al-Mughayslah neighborhood, located next to the Prophet’s Mosque, is among the latest neighborhood and emerging destination development projects in Madinah, as the neighborhood is home to a number of heritage buildings. The project aimed to highlight the area’s historical value and strengthen its urban identity while preserving its cultural traditions.
The project served as a model for the rehabilitation of old neighborhoods—particularly given the high population density in the area—by renovating old residential areas and making them more livable, and improving the quality of life in the targeted neighborhoods, in addition to providing investment opportunities and enhancing the business environment in the neighborhood as a tourist and commercial hub in Madinah.
The Al-Mughayslah neighborhood featured more than seven destinations that offered visitors a blend of Medina’s heritage and culture, including traditional inns, heritage restaurants, and shops selling antiques, gifts, and traditional clothing, thereby presenting a model that reflects the city’s architectural and cultural diversity.
The project also embodied an approach that integrated luxury hospitality units inspired by local heritage alongside a variety of culinary and café brands, as well as cultural and community experiences that enriched the lives of the neighborhood’s residents and visitors.
The Al-Mughaislah neighborhood development project helped improve the quality of infrastructure, enhance the quality and accessibility of public services, generate an economic impact throughout Madinah, support sustainable development goals, and preserve heritage.
In a report on promoting sustainable development in the region, the Madinah Development Authority explained that projects to rehabilitate old neighborhoods represented a response to the requirements of sustainability and heritage preservation, the promotion of mixed-use development, the creation of job opportunities, developing public spaces, and achieving social inclusion—all as part of an effort to revitalize existing areas socially, economically, and urbanistically.
Throughout the project’s implementation phases, the Madinah Development Authority was committed to developing plans to improve the surrounding environment and transform old areas into developed and distinctive urban neighborhoods, setting a high standard across the Kingdom, with efforts focused on developing and improving infrastructure and roads, renovating buildings, and eliminating visual disturbances in these neighborhoods.
