Prince Alwaleed bin Talal revealed that he is studying different locations in the world, including Shanghai, Moscow, London and New York, to build a mile-high skyscraper to be the tallest skyscraper in the world. The prince invited Emaar, Dubai's largest real estate company headed by Mohamed Alabbar, to collaborate on the project with his company Kingdom Holding Company.
Alwaleed told Reuters by phone the night before last that he is currently studying and evaluating the possibility of building a mile-high tower, equivalent to 1.6 kilometers.
He added that his company also needs good partners and that he is “inviting Emaar and Mr. Alabbar” to collaborate with his company to build this tower somewhere in the world.
Alwaleed did not disclose how the project would be financed if it were to see the light of day or when it would be completed. He also stated that the cost has not yet been determined.
Alwaleed said during the phone call that he is now inviting major cities in the world such as Shanghai, Moscow, New York, London and regional cities in the Middle East to come forward and submit their bids.
Industry experts said that building a mile-long skyscraper involves technical and design challenges, including economical water supply at that height, but concluded that the project is not impossible.
If realized, the new mile-high tower would surpass the 828-meter-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai and a kilometer-high tower now being built by Kingdom Holding in Jeddah. The Kingdom Tower, expected to be completed in 2017, is expected to cost about 4.6 billion riyals ($ 1.2 billion) and is part of a complex that includes a hotel, luxury residential apartments and a large shopping mall.
The Kingdom Tower is expected to cost about 4.6 billion riyals ($ 1.2 billion).
