Success has a distinct flavor and taste that only those who have tasted failure and endured its bitterness can truly appreciate; for success that comes easily is bound to fade away, for all those who have succeeded in life have walked barefoot over the thorns of suffering, anxiety, and deep thought, and the winds of despair have swept them up and tossed them about many times, There are people in life who, had they given in to the moments of failure they experienced, would have deprived humanity of their innovations and inventions; Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, failed dozens of times and was initially unsuccessful in completing his invention. And every time an experiment failed, he would say, "That’s great—we’ve proven that this, too, is an unsuccessful method for reaching the invention I dream of," He did not call them "failed experiments" but rather "experiments that did not succeed." Although he failed a great many times, this did not lead him to despair; instead, he kept trying. In 1879, Edison succeeded in keeping the light bulb lit for a long time.
Then came the inventor of the sewing machine, who also failed many times, but that did not discourage the poor young man Elias Howe, He was working as a salesman in a machine shop in the United States, and one day, as he watched his wife sewing clothes, the idea came to him. In 1839, he invented a machine that mimicked this motion, but it was completely impractical, He was unable to use it properly, as it sewed on one side but not the other. He devoted himself once again to developing his invention for seven consecutive years without tiring or losing heart, but he came to a halt at the final stage, because he could not thread the needle; it slipped from his hand, and his invention came to a halt there. His financial situation deteriorated significantly, yet he continued to search for a solution. One night, he stayed awake until morning, thinking, but eventually grew too tired and fell asleep. In his dream, he saw someone chasing him, holding a spear with a hole through its tip. When Haw woke up, he realized he had found the solution, and he pierced the tips of his sewing needles so that the machine would work properly. His life transformed from extreme poverty to wealth—from a mere salesman earning $8 a month to an inventor earning thousands of dollars for his invention.
May God have mercy on my father, for he used to recite to us when we were young the words of the poet:
I felt great comfort, though I did not see it
It can only be attained by crossing a bridge of toil
