Riyadh Municipality will host the 61st World Council of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) in Riyadh on Monday, in partnership with the International Society of City and Regional Planners, from December 1 to 4, 2025, under the theme: “Cities and Regions in Motion: Planning pathways towards resilience and quality of life”.
The Secretariat's hosting of the global event is a reflection of the capital's growing urban status and its increasing role as a global platform for dialogue on the future of cities and an open laboratory for innovative urban experiences, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to build prosperous, efficient and resilient cities capable of keeping pace with accelerated urban transformations.
The Council is an opportunity to foster international partnerships between experts, planners and city leaders, and to highlight Riyadh's efforts to develop modern urban environments that support quality of life, increase infrastructure efficiency, and utilize data and modern technologies in resource management and development.
This year's Council will explore a wide range of urban issues, including climate resilience, digital transformation, inclusive governance, urban justice and quality of life, in addition to the challenges associated with population expansion, natural resource management, development of critical infrastructure, adoption of innovative models of data-driven planning and artificial intelligence, and envisioning more sustainable paths for urban development.
The Council's program includes plenary sessions with the participation of ministers, mayors and leaders of international organizations, interactive workshops that bring together leading planners, engineers and international experts, specialized master classes, and field trips to urban sites within Riyadh that highlight the major transformations taking place in the capital in the fields of urban design, population growth management, public space development, housing, transportation and infrastructure.
The Council will launch new initiatives, most notably the Young Planners Initiative, which gives the new generation the opportunity to formulate their visions for the future of cities and regions, as well as high-level political meetings that bring together city leaders and decision-makers to chart new directions for sustainable urban development.
The Council is being held this year as the International Society of City and Regional Planners celebrates its 60th anniversary, reflecting its expertise and influence in developing urban planning practices around the world, while Riyadh's hosting of the Council represents one of the largest international events in the field of urban and regional planning in the region.
This hosting comes in line with the major urban transformations witnessed by the capital and the broad ambitions to become a leading global city in the fields of urban design, sustainable planning, growth management and the development of integrated living environments that support the quality of life and benefit from Riyadh's strategic position and its regional and international role.
