Diriyah Company has announced the award of the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art (SMCA), worth a total of SR1.84 billion (US$490 million), to a consortium comprising Hassan Alam Construction Saudi Arabia and Al Bawani Limited.
The museum is a flagship project for the Museums Authority, providing a national incubator for modern and contemporary Saudi art.<The total area of the museum is 45,252 square meters, while the total area of the project reaches 77,428 square meters.
The main building of the museum will be designed by the British firm Goodwin Austin Johnson Architects, and the museum has received a “sustainable” certificate in the gold category in the design and construction phases, reflecting the project's commitment to accredited sustainability standards.<The Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art will serve as a global platform for Saudi and international artists and reinforce Diriyah's position as a center of culture and knowledge, emphasizing the company's commitment to developing iconic landmarks that serve the community and contribute to achieving the goals of the vision.<For his part, the CEO of the Museums Authority, Engineer Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Hammad, said that the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art will be the beating heart of the art movement in the Kingdom, pointing out that the design of this edifice was based on the historical heritage of Diriyah, to be an artistic memory that documents and celebrates the work of Saudi creators of different generations, from founding pioneers to promising young voices, while creating a wider space for mutual international cultural dialogue, hoping to be a vital platform and open source of inspiration for all segments of society.
The new museum in Diriyah will be the headquarters of the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art, while the SAMOCA Center in the Jax neighborhood will continue to serve as the experimental exhibition space in Riyadh's creative district.
